Acne is the bane of many people’s lives, affecting all ages from children, teenagers right through to adult acne sufferers.

Dermatologists, often the first port of call for acne treatment despite in the greater percentage of cases provides less than a correct solution. In a nutshell, the biggest issue is masking and not getting to the root of the cause of the acne. Let us examine for a minute the most common treatments Dermatology offers.

Oral Antibiotics and Topical Antibiotics, we know full well that antibiotics are overprescribed, in all areas of medicine. It is an unfortunate fact that the prescribing of antibiotics for acne is also causing super strains of the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, resilient to antibiotics; just like many other conditions and diseases. The best case scenario for oral and topical antibiotics is a temporary solution, while in the greater percentage of instances when stopped the acne not only returns but returns more vicious than before. It is also recognised that overuse of antibiotics produces resistant strains of bacteria, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). We need to address the underlying causes of acne, the environmental and physiological factors that cause the breakout in the first place. Masking is not a treatment, and at best antibiotics are treating only the tip of the iceberg. If we are looking at treating the symptoms, it would be the microcomedo, not the bacteria that needs our attention.

Topical antibiotics (Clindamycin), do not treat the dead skin cell problems associated with acne and also have many dangerous side effects. It is not only an ineffective treatment it can cause more problems than the existing acne.

If antibiotics are not a good treatment for acne, then Retinoids must be a better solution. Retinoids treat the underlying cause of acne don’t they? Well no they do not, Retinoids the comedolytic action of preventing the microcomedo from forming, it is blocking off the symptom but does not address the underlying cause of the acne in the first place; also, the side effects are so dramatic in many cases, due to them being highly comedogenic. Most Retinoids contain isopropyl myristate, an extremely comedogenic ingredient. Irritation of the skin is so prevalent that even with an appropriate Retinoid the patient often gives up due to the intense sensitivity the product causes.

For the Doctor or Dermatologist based treatment, this leaves Isotretinoin used in cancer treatment with side effects so severe that it seems ridiculous to use it for the treatment of acne. Nosebleeds, intense sickness, thinning hair and swollen eyelids are just a few of the common side effects of using this drug. Granted some acne sufferers have found some relief with the usage of this drug in many cases the acne has returned once the usage has ceased.

So what is the answer to long-term treatment without the chemicals, drugs and side effects?

We are in the time of naturally derived treatment and getting to the cause of the acne or Rosacea. We are mentioning Rosacea, unlike acne it cannot be cured despite Rosacea follows a similar treatment process as acne. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) a naturally derived Pine Bark Extract, Vitamin A, C and E, Photo-Nutrients such as (DIM), Mandelic, Glycolic, Salicylic Acids, plus a range of light therapies. Couple this with understanding and adjusting environmental and physiological factors and balancing hormonal levels naturally is how Acne and Rosacea treatment should be addressed.

Drugs and harsh chemicals and not an answer to most skin conditions, it is unfortunate that the medical fraternity is seemingly stuck in that rut.
